Types of Alimony

Alimony is essentially a means by which the less financially stable spouse is supported by the more financially stable spouse until he or she can become financially independent. It is also referred to as maintenance. The length of the marriage is a big factor in determining the amount of alimony.

Different types of alimony are applied to different situations:

  • Temporary alimony: This type of alimony ends when the divorce is formalized. It can sometimes be switched out with another type of alimony.
  • Bridge-the-gap alimony: This type of alimony intends to help one spouse essentially cover foreseeable bills as they re-start their life without their spouse.
  • Rehabilitative alimony: This type of alimony allows the spouse to pursue education or training that will allow them to become self-sufficient.
  • Durational alimony: This type of alimony is awarded to a spouse who was married for a short to moderate length of time and lasts only up to as long as the marriage lasted.
  • Permanent alimony: This type of alimony is awarded when a marriage lasted for a long time. It is very subjective and based on the couple’s standard of living, as well as whether the spouse can achieve that living on his or her own.

How Long Do Alimony Payments Last?

The length of time for alimony payments is often determined by the court. However, if the spouse receiving alimony remarries, their right to alimony will cease (unless they receive rehabilitative alimony). Typically, durational, permanent, and bridge-the-gap alimony ends when one spouse dies.
